3 Indian Debut Books We Are Dying To Read

3 Indian Debut Books We Are Dying To Read

Reading a debut novel is like a first date. You have the jitters, you don't know much about the author (but can't wait to find out) and the story has the ability to either keep you up all night or make you weep for the loss of perfectly good potential. Last year saw some amazing Indian authors make their mark in literature, and while we have quite a few that we'd love to recommend, these three books stand out in particular.

Add them to your TBR (to be read) pile.

Trail of Broken Wings by Sejal Badani

Trail of Broken Wings is the kind of book that will get you hooked from the start, forcing you to introspect and think about how your own past actions affect your future. Following the story of Sonya, you get to read about an Indian-American photographer, who is obligated to return home when her father falls into a coma. Her reunion with her sisters, Trisha and Marin, force all of them to go back to their childhood and deal with long hidden issues.

The Star Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

Maya, in a way, is cursed. With a horoscope that spells death and destruction, she grows up being shunned by her father until he manages to arrange her marriage to a king; a marriage of political convenience. She suddenly finds herself as the queen of Akaran, a role she never prepared for. The book follows her story, which is one of discovering herself and her own hidden powers.

Farthest Field: An Indian Story of the Second World War by Raghu Karnad

Raghu Karnad made waves with his debut novel last year. Narrating the story of India during the Second World War, it's beautiful to see how Raghu manages to write about events that happened over seven decades ago, with such precise detailing. The story is about a young man, from the South coast of India, who decided to follow his brothers-in-law into the Army just because he seeks adventure. Entrenched in the Second World War, the story takes you from Madras to Eritrea, and Iraq to Burma, through the lives of a young family and their world, gradually being taken over by violence.
