Presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has taken seriously predictions from Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol that an independent candidate would soon be entering the race for president.
In a surprise announcement on Twitter Sunday, Kristol said: "Just a heads up over this holiday weekend: There will be an independent candidate--an impressive one, with a strong team and a real chance."
Trump responded to this with a flurry of tweets, including some personal shots at Kristol and a warning that an independent bid could hurt the GOP in the fall, potentially tilting the election in favor of likely Democratic nominee Clinton.
"The Republican Party has to be smart & strong if it wants to win in November. Can't allow lightweights to set up a spoiler Indie candidate!," was his initial response.
He followed up with another tweet, "If dummy Bill Kristol actually does get a spoiler to run as an Independent, say good bye to the Supreme Court!"
