Salma Agha to meet Home Minister Rajnath Singh over Overseas Citizen of India application today
Pakistani origin singer Salma Agha is scheduled to meet Home Minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi, today. According to some reports, the meeting is held regarding the grant of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status to the celebrity who has her roots in Pakistan.
This is the second time in a few months when the Indian government is gracious. Just a few months back they granted OCI to Adnan Sami who interestingly is Agha's ex-husband.
The couple separated in 1997.
Salma Agha requests India for overseas citizen card
Agha is currently a UK citizen. Although she was born in Pakistan, the revered singer has ancestral links with India. She has given her voice in a number of Bollywood movies and has also appeared as an actress. Her most notable works include Nikaah, the 1982 classic.
She was also awarded the Filmfare award for her iconic song in the movie, Dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye.
The grant of OCI status would allow her to visit India as and when she wants. She would not need a visa before landing on any of the Indian airports. She will also enjoy the parity with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in financial, economic and educational fields except in the acquisition of agricultural or plantation properties.
The Indian Home Ministry is considering her application and a decision for granting her citizenship will soon be made.
