Sassa official to apply for bail

Poswayo briefly appeared in court on Friday (27 May) and was arrested along with 13 other suspects across the country who were part of a social grant fraud syndicate. This syndicate is accused of having defrauded Sassa of more than R2,3 million involving more than 400 social grants. This syndicate forms part of a broader on-going criminal investigation involving almost 5 000 fraudulent social grants amounting to more than R34,7 million identified to date.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks), the police’s Crime Intelligence unit, the Fraud Management and Compliance Department of the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), together with a private auditing and accounting firm made the arrest on Friday.

It was initially thought that 18 people were arrested, but only 14 were arrested and others remain under investigation.

“The syndicate operates inter-provincially and the operation is the biggest one to date. More than 500 cases of ID fraud related to these fraudulent social grants were uncovered during the internal investigation,” Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, Gauteng Hawks Communication Officer, said.

Another woman, thought to be the “mastermind” behind the syndicate, was also arrested near the Cape Town International Airport.

Poswaya appeared in the specialised commercial Crime Court in Bellville, Cape Town today (30 May) where she was expected to apply for bail.
