Pune: People’s Union -- a citizens’ group has demanded that repair works should be carried out on the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) route on Ahmednagar Road. The group in a letter written to Pune Mahanagar Parivhan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has demanded improvements in the monitoring of the route and traffic management.

“The traffic offenders can be identified with the help of the closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed along the route.
The administration should use these cameras, so as to reduce the number of accidents at the corridor,” stated the letter.

The letter added that the bus stops of the route are of rectangular shape and are causing problems in the visibility of the route. These stops should be changed.

Since the BRTS began on Ahmednagar Road on April 28, police have registered 12 accidents. The project was delayed due to land acquisition issue for a terminal. Nearly 9 acre land near Kesnand Phata needed to be acquired for the terminal. As per civic officials, the residents of Wagholi village had sent a letter to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) expressing dissent over acquisition of land for the project. But PMC got the land from state government.

A special general body meeting dedicated to problems of PMPML was held recently. During the meeting, the elected members raised the issue of pedestrians' safety along the BRTS route. After the blame game between elected members and civic officials PMC has planned safety audit of the system.
