Aparna Kumar, a 41-year-old IPS officer who recently scaled Mount Everest, the highest peak of the world, has added another feather in the cap of the state of Karnataka. A little known fact is that Aparna, an Uttar Pradesh-cadre officer, who has so far successfully scaled six of the toughest mountains, is the daughter of a nurse at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru.

Yes, most of us are not aware that Aparna is a Kannadiga. She is a 2002 batch IPS officer and is at present serving as deputy inspector general (DIG) of telecom in Lucknow. She climbed Mt Everest successfully on May 21, becoming the first woman IPS officer to achieve the feat. Aparna studied law at NLSIU, amd she is married to district magistrate Sanjay Kumar.
After successfully climbing the Vinson Massif in Antarctica, she became the first civil servant to climb the tallest peak in January 2016. Soon after she climbed Massif, she planned to climb Everest and McKinley in Alaska. As per her plans, she completed climbing Mt Everest which is 8,848 metres above sea level with -17 degrees Celsius temperature. She now has to scale one more peak, McKinley, in the months of July/August.
Facing frequent high speed winds of more than 170 mph which can blow away climbers, Aparna has achieved a milestone.
She reached Everest at 11.02 am on May 21. This was her third attempt; her attempts in 2014 and 2015 were sabotaged due to an avalanche and earthquake.
The UP government congratulated her through Twitter, followed by Rajnath Singh’s comment: ‘A proud moment for our police forces as Ms Aparna Kumar becomes the first female IPS officer to scale Everest’ and Ram Vilas Paswan’s ‘Congratulations to IPS officer Ms. Aparna Kumar for successfully scaling highest Mt. Everest. She is a great inspiration to one and all.’
Aparna is also a recipient of the 2015 Rani Lakshmi Bai Puraskar.
