THE Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ministry of Interior (MoI) has formed 35 foot and vehicle patrol teams to combat begging during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
In a press release issued on Sunday, the department said it will intensify patrols in cooperation with the Rescue Police (Al Fazaa), Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) and other authorities concerned at mosques, malls, markets and residential areas.
CID Director Brigadier Jamal Muhammad al Kaabi stressed the department's readiness to curb begging during Ramadan and holidays, when beggars exploit the spiritual atmosphere to gain sympathy and get money.
Kaabi said begging is a strange phenomenon in Qatar but some beggars enter the country and use innovative ways to seek money from citizens and residents.
He said the CID will step up efforts to curb the scourge with patrol teams comprising both men and women spreading across the country. There are other security patrols affiliated to security centres in coordination with the CID spread in different area, he said.
Kaabi said the department has allocated two lines, 2347444 and 33618627, to receive complaints from citizens and residents.
Lieutenant Abdullah Saad al Dosari, head of anti-begging section at the CID, said the section arrested more than 280 male and female beggars during last Ramadan.
He called on all citizens and residents to give charity and donations to well-known charities as they distribute donations to those who deserve. Most of the arrested beggars entered the country on tourist visas, family visas or as residents of other GCC countries.
