Johnny Cueto and Gerardo Parra got into a heated argument during an at-bat

Giants pitcher Johnny Cueto got into the rare mid-at-bat argument with the Rockies’ Gerardo Parra on Sunday after Parra continuously called timeouts.

The incident happened during the third inning as Parra was hitting with the bases loaded. Parra signaled for time, and home plate umpire Jim Reynolds granted it to the Rockies outfielder. That was fine — players can call time. Cueto returned to the rubber, but again, Parra called for time.

Reynolds granted Parra time again without hesitation, which set Cueto off in an argument from 60 feet, 6 inches.

Cueto just couldn’t understand why Parra needed to call time twice without even seeing a pitch. It was weird that Reynolds granted the time too, considering MLB’s pace of play rules discourage that. The umpire can deny a timeout request, which should have happened there.

Cueto stepped away before he completely lost his cool in a high-leverage situation. He was finally able to throw a pitch to Parra, who eventually lined into an inning-ending double play.
