Amritsar, May 29

A migrant of Bihar, Anil Kumar (30), lost his battle with life here today. He was trapped due to caving in of earth while working inside a sewage ditch at Ram Nagar Colony, located on Majitha Road bypass, here in the late evening yesterday. This is fourth death reported in the past one week.

The incident occurred at around 6.30 pm. He got stuck beneath after a portion of the earth in the sewage ditch caved in. He was cementing the sewerage pipes when the earth fell on him.

Another labourer Sunil Kumar and a youth, identified as Ajay, living nearby jumped in the ditch to rescue him. However, while they were digging, another mound of earth fell on them.

An onlooker immediately summoned an earth mover and pulled them out. However, Anil could be pulled out at 9 pm. He was rushed to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital immediately while he was still breathing. However, he died later on.

The incident has once again brought forth the fact that agencies and private companies involved in construction activities show scant regard for lives of labourers hired for work. The police authorities said action had been initiated under the criminal procedure code.
