CALGARY, AB--(Marketwired - May 29, 2016) - Over 10,000 people took part in the 52^nd annual Scotiabank Calgary Marathon, raising more than $750,000 for 85 local charities through the Scotiabank Charity Challenge.

Jonathan Kipchirchir from Kenya won the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon with a time of 2:21:55. Andrea Glover of Alberta won the women's event with a time of 3:02:14.

"The Scotiabank Calgary Marathon is healthy competition at its best. It is where people of all ages and abilities come together to push their perceived limits and achieve greatness, where ordinary folk run the same race and cross the same finish line as the best runners in the country and some of the fastest in the world," said Kirsten-Ellen Fleming, Executive Director, Scotiabank Calgary Marathon. "This event celebrates community, charitable giving and the spirit of Calgary and we are proud of what the 10,000 runners achieved today after months of sacrifice and training."

Today's race also included some inspiring highlights. Albertan Chris Koch, born with no arms or legs, finished the marathon on a longboard at 4:23:12. Noel Darcy made an attempt to break the current Guiness World Record for the fastest marathon in firefighter gear. And if that wasn't enough, they raised funds for Inn From the Cold and Muscular Dystrophy respectively, through the Scotiabank Charity Challenge.

"With the support of the Calgary community, the Scotiabank Charity Challenge reached a fundraising total of $750,000 and counting, for 85 charities."

The Scotiabank Charity Challenge is well established across the country at six Scotiabank-sponsored marathon events including Montreal, Halifax, Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto. "Since its inception in 2003, runners have raised over $46 million for community charities. Today's event has taken us closer to reaching the $50 million fundraising milestone nationally," said Mr. Stang.

The Scotiabank Charity Challenge is a turnkey fundraising program that provides a simple way for runners in these races to support local causes that make a significant impact on Canadian communities. Participating charities keep 100% of the proceeds raised, as Scotiabank pays for all transaction and credit card fees.
