The fire in Fort Collins on May 29, 2016 started in the garage and spread to the attic.

A fire caused by improper disposal of hot ashes displaced a family of six in Fort Collins on Sunday morning.

No one was injured in the blaze at 2709 William Neal Parkway, according to a news release from the Poudre Fire Authority.

The fire began in the house’s garage at about 7:40 a.m. and spread to the attic. Family members were able to evacuate their dogs, and firefighters rescued two cats.

The release advised: “Ashes should always be disposed of in a metal can with a tight-fitting metal lid. That can should be kept on a noncombustible surface.”
