Former Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh has shown her support for One Direction singer Niall Horan following the abuse he suffered from fans during the week.
Horan voiced his frustration on Twitter earlier this week, saying that a group of fans got his number, and proceeded to send him abusive texts regarding his family – including his young nephew.
Speaking about the incident, former Rose Walsh said that she admired his attitude in standing up to the “online bullies”.
For the last two weeks I've been receiving messages off a group of fans, they have drowned my phone in messages, keeping me awake at night

But the worst part is. They have been nothing but abusive . Saying things you wouldn't even believe about me and my family

And saying the worst things ever about my little nephew. Thank god I'm not the kind of person who thinks into stuff like this

Don't worry about me .im the most carefree , laid back person around. But I'm just signalling it, because this shite is happening to others

Writing in today’s Sun on Sunday, Walsh said “I have been a big fan of One Direction’s Niall Horan for some time — as are many of our young people”.
“In terms of connecting and raising awareness for the Irish Diaspora, he makes significant contributions.
“For example, he showcased his words and love around Ireland so effortlessly in the 2013 One Direction documentary, This Is Us” she said, “and this week he continued his good deeds by fighting against online bullies”.
“He vented his annoyance through his popular Twitter account about a certain group of fans”.
“Horan is not usually one to share his annoyance online but because of his kick-back, thousands of fans have rallied with him”.
She said, “With that in mind, I must also shout out his push at a charity event in Surrey, England, to get more females involved in golf. #luckytohaveniall”.
