Harry Potter

Yes, it has been years since Harry Potter ended but such is the love of fans that they can’t seem to bid goodbye to this most-loved fiction series. Recently, a fan theory emerged online and if it's correct then there’s one more thing horrible thing that ‘You Know Who’ aka Voldemort ruined at Hogwarts.

To understand this new theory, we need to revisit and rewind. So, three years after the release of the first book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, author JK Rowling had revealed in an interview that there were about 1,000 students at Hogwarts. Going by the four houses – Gryffindor, Slytherin , Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, each house should have 250 children. But when you look at the movie version of the book, it just doesn’t fit!

For example, there's approximately 18 first-year Gryffindors.

For years, fans have just ignore this fact and thought it to be a mathematical error until this Tumblr user came up with a theory that could explain why Harry Potter's class is so small. Marauders4evr says:

"Oh my God…I just realized something. For years, we’ve all wondered how there can be 1,000 students (according to J.K. Rowling) in Hogwarts when there are only a handful of students in Harry’s year. The math doesn’t add up. We’ve all just assumed that it was an error. But what if there’s normally dozens of students in each house, in each year? What if Harry’s year was the exception? What if there were less students in the Hogwarts Class of 1998 because the period when the other kids would have been conceived (1979-1981) was when Voldemort’s reign of power was at its peak? Between the dozens of adults who joined the Order, the dozens of civilians who were killed in Death Eater raids, and the dozens of adults who didn’t want to bring a child into the world, just then…It’s actually entirely possible that there was a baby drought for a few years in the wizarding world, leading to a smaller class size a decade later."

Shocked? So was I when I first read it! Why didn’t anyone think of this before? The reason can be that none of us Harry Potter obsessed lot paid attention to other details except for this one. But come to think of it, it really makes perfect sense! *Sigh*
