England manager Roy Hodgson says Marcus Rashford "wouldn't be out of place" in his 23-man squad for Euro 2016. The 18-year-old striker scored on his international debut against Australia on 27 May, and the England boss has suggested he may have done enough to secure his place on the plane for the tournament in France.

Rashford has enjoyed a meteoric rise since making his Manchester United debut in February. But Hodgson insisted the pacey forward has the quality to star at international level. "It's fantastic – I'm pleased for him [Rashford]. He tired a bit but that's normal," he told ITV Sport.

"What a debut," Hodgson continued to say. "You asked if he was capable of dealing with the situation and I think we got a resounding yes."

Hodgson needs to name his final 23 final before the end of the month and with an injury cloud hanging over Daniel Sturridge, there is an ever-increasing belief that Rashford could force his way into the squad. However, the England boss is still coy about whether the United man will make the final cut.

"Let's wait and see. I've got until Tuesday to name my squad but he wouldn't be out of place in anyone's 23," he said of Rashford, who was among United's better players in the second half of their season.

Meanwhile, Hodgson also praised Rashford's versatility, pointing out that he can play as a central striker or out wide, thereby allowing his United teammate Wayne Rooney to play through the middle against Australia in their 2-1 win. "The system in the second half worked slightly better. He (Rooney) played centre-forward and we wanted to look at Marcus Rashford on the right and I got the answers I wanted," the England boss explained.
