Hectic lobbying for Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council seats in K'taka

Bengaluru, May 29 (UNI) With the Congress finalising the names of former Union ministers Oscar Fernandes and Jairam Ramesh for June 11 biennial election to four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka Assembly and BJP poised to win the third, there will be keen battle for the fourth seat. Ruling Congress in the state is assured of two seats and the BJP a berth due to their relative strengths in the state Assembly. While Congress has already announced two of its candidates, the BJP is still undecided and the state leaders are awaiting the final decision from the Central leadership. However, sources said the BJP is likely to field Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitaraman and decided against pitting Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu as he was an 'outsider'. Mr Naidu had already represented Karnataka for four terms in the Elder's house but this time faced stiff opposition. The BJP leader, who attended 'Vikasa Parva' public meeting in the city to mark two years of NDA rule at the centre, had since returned to New Delhi. Sources said the party was likely to field Ms Sitaraman as her parents have been living in Bengaluru for several decades. Congress party has indicated that it would field former top cop K C Ramamurthy for the third seat and hope to win it with the support of independent MLAs. Mr Ramamurthy heads chain of educational institutions in the city. Congress has a strength of 123 members in the 225-member House and could easily win two seats and has a surplus vote of 33. It needs another 13 seats to win the third seat and is looking to muster support from independents (11), small parties (7) and from disgruntled JD(S) legislators to enable the third candidate emerge victorious.
