Inspired by doctor moms, CET toppers aspire to be cardios
Mysuru: M Niharika of Marimallappa PU College and Raveesh Suresh Bannihatti of Sri Ramakrishna Vidyashala secured 45th and 56th rank, respectively, in medical in Common Entrance Test (CET), the results of which were announced statewide on Saturday. The test was held early this month for students seeking admission to medical, engineering and other undergraduate courses.
Both of them want to become cardiologists.
Niharika, from a family of medical professionals, made up her mind to study medicine in childhood itself. Niharika's father Dr G Manjunath is a surgeon at Gundulpet Government Hospital, while her mother Dr Puttathyamma is a gynaecologist at Nanjangud General Hospital.
Niharika, who secured 583 marks in II PU exams, told STOI that she expected to be in top 50 after writing CET. "From my childhood, I wanted to do medicine. Today, I'm happy with my results. I want to specialize in cardiology. Apart from solving few question booklets, I also referred to internet for updates which helped me crack CET."
In II PU exam, Niharika had secured centum in maths and biology, 98 in physics, 99 in chemistry, 94 in English and 92 in Kannada. In CET, she has scored 53 in physics, 57 in chemistry, 56 in biology and 34 in maths.
Raveesh, the all-rounder
Raveesh, who scored 589 marks in II PU exams, stands 56th in medical. He is not only good in studies, but also in extra-curricular activities, including sports. He has taken part in the district-level football and table tennis tournaments. He was also adjudged as Smart Student in the college. He was also secretary of literary department in the college. "By focusing only on studies, one can't score good marks. One should also unwind by engaging in extra-curricular activities -- both sports or any cultural activities -- to rejuvenate and excel," he said.

Raveesh's mother Dr Nalina H R is a paediatrician in Bidadi Government Hospital, while his father Suresh B P is a joint director at KMF (Bengaluru).
The student of Ramakrishna Vidyashala said: "My mother, a doctor, used to take me to hospital and share with me her experience with patients, especially those having heart-related ailments. This made me to resolve to be a cardiologist. The training at Vidyalaya and help from my teachers helped me to achieve this feat. I worked out problems extensively and planned my study."
Raveesh had emerged topper in his institution by securing 589 marks (centum in Sanskrit, physics, maths and biology, and 99 and 90 in chemistry and English, respectively). He is applying for revaluation in English. He is awarded 90 as against 95, his expectation. In CET, Raveesh scored 50 in physics, 58 in biology, 57 in chemistry and 41 in maths.
Vidyashala principal S Balaji said: "Raveesh is not only good in academics, but also in all activities he lays his hands on. He is very sincere, honest and obedient. We are proud of his achievement."
Dhanush hits the bulls-eye
Mother Teresa, Deeksha PU College student S R Dhanush, who stood 48th in engineering, is Mysore district topper in CET in engineering. He scored 583 marks with centum in physics, maths and chemistry in II PU exams. In CET, he scored 59 in maths, 55 in chemistry and 52 in physics. "Having interest in physics, I want to pursue electrical and electronics engineering," Dhanush added. He is the son of Ravi Kumar and Latha Devi.
Time-based CET helped him
H L Praveen Raj from Master PU College (Hassan) secured 6th rank in engineering and 53rd in medial in CET. He attributes his success to 10-12 time-based CET held in his college. He wants to pursue computer science engineering, either at RV College (Bengaluru) or at NIIT (Surathkal).
Praveen had scored 591 marks in II PU exams with centum in physics, chemistry, maths and biology. Praveen did well even in CET for which he did not take any tuitions. He has scored 56 in physics and chemistry, 60 in maths and 54 in biology.
"I expected to be in top 30. I was surprised to know that I stood 6th rank in engineering. College staff were supportive," said Praveen, son of H V Lokesha and Chandrakala.
