DMK treasurer and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin on Thursday made a strong case for evolving a transparent method for appointment of Vice-Chancellors (V-Cs) for all universities in Tamil Nadu, saying higher education had reached stagnation for lack of proper guidelines in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors.
“Appointing great scholars and educationists alone will improve the quality of education.
“As a first step, the State government should follow the rules and regulations of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and come out with a transparent procedure for the appointment of V-Cs for University of Madras and Anna University,” he said in a statement.
To drive home the point that only good V-Cs would take higher education to great heights, he attributed the poor performance of Tamil Nadu students in GATE and IIT-JEE to the failure to pay attention to improve higher education.
“A V-C is not just a head of a university. He also has the responsibility to improve the education of the State. They alone can ensure that the students of the State achieve distinction not only in the country but across the world,” he said, pointing out that a case had already been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to follow proper guidelines for appointment of V-Cs.
