Panaji: Beginning Monday, the traffic cell of the Goa police will crack down on vehicles sporting tinted glasses and improper number plates. The drive will last a fortnight and will be conducted for at least four hours per day.
Motorists will be booked if they are found to be driving/riding rashly, using the high beam of their vehicles indiscriminately, driving/riding without proper light and carrying more than the stipulated number of passengers.

Superintendent of police (traffic) Bosco George, in a direction issued to police stations and traffic cells across the state, said, “Every police station’s in-charge and the traffic in-charge of the area shall utilize the maximum strength of their resources to book these and other traffic violations.” He also requested the SP of the police control room (PCR) to direct the concerned PCR vans/highway patrol vehicles to be readily available during the 15-day period.
In last month’s driveconducted from April 15 to 30against traffic offenders, police concentrated largely on minor riders/drivers, individuals driving without a licence, riders not using helmets, those driving/riding under the influence of alcohol, and motorists using their cellphones while commuting. As many as 56,297 cases were booked, of which 45,636 were against those riding without helmets, 285 for commuting without a licence and 324 for driving under the influence of alcohol. There were also 10,052 other traffic violations booked.
Deputy superintendent of police (traffic) D G P Angle, said the cell plans to send 10 traffic police personnel for training to New Delhi. “Upon their return, we will hold a training programme for police and members of the public every Saturday in both districts of the state,” he added. Angle also said that rash and negligent drivers, and those booked for driving under the influence would be directed to attend the programme.
Concerned about the spurt in road accidents in the state, the Goa police has also decided to undertake a detailed survey of roads and analyze traffic accidents in a bid to ascertain the reasons behind them.
