Bombs blast in TMC rally, kids hurt

Barasat: Nine persons, including four kids and two women, were injured after crude bombs exploded during a Trinamool procession at Kripalpur in Basirhat on Saturday. The area falls in Basirhat Uttar Assembly constituency that was won by CPM's Rafiqul Islam. Trinamool alleged that goons, hired by the CPM, hurled bombs at the procession organised to celebrate the party's victory.
"Ever since the CPM won this seat, there have been acts of violence against us. The terror was so great that we couldn't even organise a victory rally. On Friday evening, a meeting was convened at the Chaiti Gram Panchayat where a decision was taken to take out a procession on Saturday morning to celebrate Mamata Banerjee's swearing-in as chief minister for the second time. A large number of people, including women and children, agreed to participate in the procession," a Trinamool leader said.
The procession started around 11.30 am and proceeded along the road from the Chaiti gram panchayat towards Kripalpur. Nearly 200 people from Chaiti and other panchayats were walking when the first blast occurred. When people started running for cover, the second bomb went off. For some time, people cowered behind cover as the injured lay on the street crying for help. After some time, the injured persons were moved to Basirhat sub division hospital.
Six of the injured, including two children and a similar number of women, were admitted while the others were released after first aid. Among those admitted are Ashiq Mondal and Rehan Mondal, both 10-12 years old. Tension prevailed in the area after the blast with a large police force, led by senior officers, being deployed. A complaint was lodged at the Basirhat police station against unidentified CPM workers.
"This attack was pre-planned. Several bombs were hurled at the procession. Ever since the CPM won this seat, it got goons from elsewhere to terrorise Trinamool supporters. Their houses were ransacked and many were beaten up ruthlessly. We have not retaliated so far as Didi has asked us to maintain peace. But things are now getting out of hand," said former MLA and Trinamool leader ATM Abdullah.
CPM MLA Rafiqul Islam said: "No CPM worker was involved. Trinamool workers were carrying bombs for use against CPM supporters but they went off by accident."
