SELANGOR, May 28 (Bernama) -- PETRONAS Gas Berhad (PGB) achieved another milestone in its corporate social investment (CSI) through its “Livelihood Programme”, a community-related initiative which provided skills building training to deserving women.

A graduation ceremony was organised today at Kampung Bukit Raya, Hulu Langat for the first-batch of 17 participants who demonstrated effort and determination in acquiring skills through a series of baking and pastry-making classes held from October 2015 until January this year.

“We expanded our CSI approach last year by teaming up with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) to spearhead new programmes that address the diverse needs of the communities located near our plants as well as pipelines. Hence, we embarked on this PGB Livelihood Programme,” said PGB Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Encik Yusa’ Hassan.

Also present were PGB Head of Commercial and Corporate Services, Encik Abdul Razak Saim; PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad Head of Retail Business, Encik Shaharuddin Mohd Sidek; Yayasan Salam Malaysia (SALAM) Chief Operation Officer, Encik Md. Ghani Ibrahim; Head of Kampung Bukit Raya Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK), Haji Mohd Saili Haji Jemakir; Kolej Komuniti Hulu Langat Director Dr. Noriah Abdul Malek as well as the class facilitators.

The programme is conducted in collaboration with SALAM, which objective is to assist the urban poor community elevate their livelihood. Besides the Livelihood Programme in Hulu Langat, PGB also conducts a similar programme in Segamat, Johor.

Apart from baking and pastry-making classes, the participants were also enlightened on basic accounting skills, as well as on conventional and online marketing to sell their products. To this end, they have already received orders for their cookies and buns that come in myriad varieties and flavours, which will be marketed through various outlets which may include PETRONAS Mesra shops, local shops and school canteens in Hulu Langat.

In addition to the training, PGB also provided cooking utensils and raw ingredients for the classes, which were held twice weekly at a community centre, or balai raya, in Kampung Bukit Raya. The centre was also earlier refurbished by PGB to provide safety and comfort to the participants.

PGB is constantly finding new ways to reinforce both its CSIs and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments. PGB previously embarked on an environment-related programme known as “Sayangi Sungai Paka” in Dungun, Terengganu last year.
