Gatlin, Farah head the field at Prefontaine Classic

Justin Gatlin, Mo Farah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce are some of the big names to be taking part in this weekend’s Prefontaine Classic.

The 100m in particular will be something to look forward to as it includes a stellar field of Gatlin, Asafa Powell, Andre De Gasse and Tyson Gay as athletes continue to tune up their performances ahead of the Rio Olympics.

BASKETBALL

Curry leads Warriors to 120-111 win

The Golden State Warriors stayed alive in their Western Conference finals with a 120-111 victory that brought the series score to 3-2 in Oklahoma City Thunder’s favour.

While the Game 5 win keeps them in the contest, they still have the task of winning away at Oklahoma City in Game 6 on Saturday to force Game 7, which if needed will be at Oakland on Monday.

Stephen Curry led the Warriors on Thursday night, scoring 31 points. Klay Thompson provided the support with 27 points.

Fang Yan

India’s Abhijeet Gupta was stunned by Chinese Fang Yan at the Asian continental Chess Championship taking place in Tashkent. B Adhiban had no trouble in his game, as he dispatched Shamsiddin Vakhidov in a match that lasted just 20 moves.

CRICKET

Kiwis announce schedule for next two seasons

New Zealand on Friday unveiled a packed home international schedule for the next two seasons. Apart from hosting increased number of Tests, ODIs and T20s, the schedule also includes the possibility of hosting a day-night Test match against England at Auckland’s Eden Park in 2018.

FOOTBALL

Madrid clubs to battle it out in Champions League final

Milan’s San Siro in Italy will host a Madrid derby this weekend as the Champions League final is between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid for the second time in three seasons.

While Real will be looking to win the trophy for a record 11th time, Atletico are still looking for their first. The defeat in Lisbon two years ago will still be fresh in the memories of those that played that final for Atletico and they will look to settle the score against their traditional rivals.

Real’s Cristiano Ronaldo strongly believes that they are the superior side, but agrees that they will have to show it on the pitch to win the bragging rights.

GOLF

Lahiri joint second at Dean and Deluca Invitational

India’s Anirban Lahiri managed a fantastic five-under 65 in the opening round of the Dean and Deluca Invitational at the Colonial, a score that puts him joint second in the event.

SQUASH

Nicol David makes it to the last four

A 11-7 11-9 win in her final league game against Nouran Gohar earned Nicol David a place in the last four of the PSA World Series finals. The victory keeps David on track to complete a hat-trick of World Series finals titles.

TENNIS

Muguruza, Halep in French Open fourth round

While Garbine Muguruza had it easy against Yanina Wickmayer, Simona Halep had to fight her way through to the fourth round of the French Open on Friday.

After Muguruza became the first player to reach the fourth round with her 6-3 6-0 victory, Halep made it the hard way, courtesy a come-from-behind 4-6 6-2 6-3 win against Naomi Osaka.

On Thursday, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams and Venus Williams cruised through to the next round.
