Madurai: Madurai collector K Veera Raghava Rao, who wielded the broom on Friday to clean the collectorate premises as part of the Swachh Bharat scheme, was shocked when he entered the office of the department of mines - it looked more like a junkyard than a government office space. Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Nanduri also accompanied the collector along with other officials.

This scheme aims to clean different premises every 15 days. The cleaning process was carried out in industries from May 1 to 15 this month. The second phase from May 16 to May 31 will focus on cleaning government buildings and offices.
The office of the department of mines looked clean at the entrance, but when the collector removed a cloth that was hiding a pile of old broken furniture, the shock was obvious on his face. He asked the officials how they could even think of keeping their work place in such a bad state.
Workers and employees of the collectorate were also administered the Swachh Bharat pledge by the collector to keep India clean.
