Phase-II of ABC project in pipeline

It's been a year since the Kochi corporation launched its Animal Birth Control for Dogs (ABCD) programme to deal with the stray dog menace in the city.

Kochi: It's been a year since the Kochi corporation launched its Animal Birth Control for Dogs (ABCD) programme to deal with the stray dog menace in the city.
Now, the corporation is planning the expand the scope of the programme. Till date, doctors have effectively carried out over 1,000 sterilizations.
"It will take at least two to three years to see the results.
In the next stage, we are planning to provide in-patient facility for dogs that require prolonged treatment, a pet crematorium, hostel and a mobile veterinary unit for pets," said mayor Soumini Jain.
Deputy mayor T J Vinod stated that plan for a second ABCD centre was also in the pipeline.
Meanwhile, the ABCD centre at Brahmapuram have been trying to meet the targets, and have stated that they would soon move to the next phase.
"We not only sterilize dogs but also vaccinate them. An average of 16 to18 surgeries are performed daily. In the next phase, we plan to include a programme where in NGOs or the public can bring dogs from corporation areas for surgery," said Dr Kishorekumar K J, principal investigator of the ABCD programme.
