Shivamogga: A woman who had kidnapped a newborn baby from a government hospital Bhadravathi and killed it later -- out of fear of being caught -- was arrested by the police on Wednesday. The accused is Saroja of Lingadahalli near Tarikere.
According to police, Saroja has confessed to the crime during interrogation. Saroja, being depressed over not having children, decided to steal a newborn from the hospital.
Accordingly, she arrived at the hospital early on June 11 morning and kidnapped the day-old baby boy while his mother Geevitha was sleeping. Upon noticing that the boy was missing, Arun, the father of the boy, registered a complaint with Bhadravathi police.
Meanwhile, after coming out of the hospital, Saroja started fearing that she might get caught by the police and threw it under the bridge in a bid to get away with it. Police had found the body of the baby the next day.
Since then, the police were searching for the woman. Though the CCTV footage showed a woman moving suspiciously near the hospital, police could not identify her as the images were blur.
Following the incident, the DHO visited the hospital and suspended five staff who were on duty at the maternity ward on that day.
