Another tiger found dead in Melghat, region loses its second tiger in 5 days
Nagpur: The Melghat Tiger Reserve (MTR) in Amravati district, where tiger sighting is very rare, lost its second tiger in a span of five days on Friday. This is the eighth tiger death in the region this year and third in the last 27 days. On Friday afternoon, the field staff on patrolling found the carcass of a tigress, known as T15, deep down near a den in Vairat beat of Chikhaldara range.
The wildcat was said to be 8 years old.
On May 22, a full-grown dominant male tiger of Chikhaldara, known as T14, was found dead near a waterhole in the same range. The tigress T15 was also found dead 7-8km away from the spot where T14 was found. Earlier, on May 4, a young male was found dead in Doni area outside Kolsa range of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve
Though forest officials could not be reached, sources said the carcass was highly decomposed and seems to be about eight days old. Poaching has been ruled out as body parts of the tigress were found to be intact, but considering an average life of 12-14 years in the wild, the tigress could have lived for another 4-5 years and could have produced two more litters.
Field director Dinesh Tyagi, deputy conservator of forests (DyCF) for Gugamal division RK Wankhede, assistant conservator of forests (ACF) Vishal Mali along with assistant commissioner of animal husbandry at Achalpur, Dr VS Rahate and others visited the spot.
The body parts and samples like viscera, lungs, heart, stomach contents, maggots etc will be sent for forensic analysis to Nagpur to confirm the exact cause of death.
The carcass was burned in the presence of all officials and veterinary doctors after the post mortem at the spot.
