Governor KK Paul opened the 14th Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament amid picturesque surroundings of Nainital with a tee-off shot early this morning. On the occasion he threw light on the objectives of the golf tournament.

He said the event was organised to project Nainital as well as the entire Uttarakhand as an excellent tourist destination at the national and international level. The natural splendor of the region gets highlighted by this tournament. He said he wanted to establish Raj Bhawan, Nainital, as a unique and special destination for golfers, golf lovers and other visitors.

The Governor said schoolchildren interested in golf were now being trained at the golf club free-of-cost to promote the game .On the Governor’s initiative, an inter-school golf tournament was organised here on May 22 .This will encourage youngsters to play golf.

More than 125 golfers from various parts of the state are participating in the three-day golf tournament this year. Today 52 golfers, including two young girls took part in the game. The participation of 73-year-old KK Senger, 10-year-old (the youngest) Raghav Kalra an international level golfer, 11-year-old Agrima Manral bears testimony to the popularity of this tournament. All players had to play 18 holes today. Out of these, 20 best players will be selected for the final game. Indian hockey team’s former captain Zafar Iqbal will participate tomorrow. GS Majithia, 95-year super veteran golfer and other super veterans played yesterday. Golfers from various parts of the country will witness a cultural presentation tomorrow evening at the state guest house where Uttarakhand’s folk artistes will perform.

At the inaugural session Secretary to the Governor Arun Dhaundiyal, Nainital Municipal Board Chairman Shyam Narayan, Kumaon Commissioner AS Nyal, DIG PS Sailal, DM Deepak Rawat, SSP Sweety Agarwal, ADC and golf club secretary Dr YS Rawat, ADC Maj Anuj Rathaur, golf captain Col (retd) Harish Shah, KMVN’s General Manager, several other senior officials, sponsors and co-sponsors, golfers, eminent persons and members of the media were present.
