The 27-year-old has always insisted upon his innocence.

In October last year, the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) referred Evans' case to the Court of Appeal on the basis of new information following a 10 month investigation.

At a brief hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday morning, Evans, wearing a black suit, white shirt and navy tie, spoke to confirm his name.

He entered a not guilty plea to one count of rape, which is alleged to have taken place in May 2011.
