KUSA dominates May sweeps; KCNC solidly at No. 2, KDVR strong at 10 p.m.

The just-completed May sweeps show the Denver TV market to be fiercely competitive as stations add even more newscasts.

While KUSA-Channel 9 remains dominant in all newscasts — continuing a four-decade winning streak — KCNC-Channel 4 is solidly established as No. 2 and KDVR-Channel 31 successfully introduced two newscasts, wee hours and mid-morning (4:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.).

At 10 p.m., the Fox affiliate had good story to tell: KDVR finished up 11 percent while KMGH was down by 9 percent, KCNC down by 32 percent and leader KUSA down 34 percent. (At 9 p.m., KDVR was down 14 percent.)

The power of CBS in primetime (14 out of the top 20 shows) had a positive effect on KCNC’s numbers. The top 20 local favorites, all CBS unless otherwise noted: “NCIS,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Madam Secretary,” “NCIS: N.O.”, two “Dancing with the Stars” broadcasts (ABC), three “60 Minutes” broadcasts, “The Good Wife,” “The Voice” (NBC), “NCIS: LA,”  two”The Voice”  broadcasts (NBC), “Blue Bloods,” “Survivor, Criminal Minds,” “Hawaii 5-O Special,” “Hawaii 5-O,” “Chicago Fire” (NBC), “Chicago Med” (NBC).

In late-night, the Denver market’s preferred host is Jimmy Fallon on NBC (6 share or percent of the viewing audience), followed by Stephen Colbert on CBS (4 share) and Jimmy Kimmel on ABC (2 share).

The late-news battle on weekdays among adults 25-54, looked like this:
