Pune: The night police patrol took two men into custody for allegedly bludgeoning their neighbour and friend, a 22-year-old vada pav vendor, to death at an open ground in Keshavnagar, Mundhwa, around 2.30am on Friday.
The assailants Subhash Kengar (24) and Prakash Bhosale (26) both from Gairanvasti in Keshavnagar murdered their neighbour Suraj alias Bablu Vilas Atole due to previous enmity.
Around seven months ago, Atole and the assailants had gotten into a fight after one of them, under the influence of alcohol allegedly abused his mother.
Around 11pm on Thursday, the assailants took Atole to an open ground for consuming liquor. Around 2.30am, a dispute broke between them over the same issue.
Bhosale then broke a beer bottle on Atole's head. Both the assailants then picked up a heavy stone and bludgeoned him to death. "The assailants were rushing home and the motorbike developed a problem. When they were pushing the bike, a patrol comprising Shakur Pathan and Anil Sarode stopped them, seeing that their clothes were soaked in blood," senior inspector Jan Mohammad Pathan, in-charge of the Mundhwa police station, said.
Pathan said that the assailants were taken into custody after they failed to explain why there were blood stains on their clothes. The assailants tried to evade the arrest claiming they had met with an accident. But the patrol did not find any injuries on them, neither was there a dent on the motorbike.
During sustained interrogation, the assailants confessed to have murdered Atole due to previous enmity.
Kengar works as a delivery boy at a gas agency while Bhosale is a painting labourer. The victim's mother Rama Vikas Atole (42) has filed a complaint of murder against the assailants under the Indian Penal Code, Pathan added.

Our clothes were soaked in blood because we had met with an accident. This is what two men told a night police patrol when they were stopped on suspicion while pushing a motorbike. The patrol did not find injuries on their person and nor did they notice a dent on the bike. Fearing that they had committed some crime, the patrol took them into custody for interrogation. Their suspicion turned out to be true, when they confessed of bludgeoning a 22 year old vada pav vendor to death in an open ground at Keshavnagar in Mundhwa on Friday around 2.30 am.
