Army bomb disposal team disable viable 'War of Independence era' bomb
An Army Bomb Disposal Team were called into action after a historic yet viable artillery shell was discovered in a Cork forest this afternoon.
The Defence Forces deployed the Army Bomb Disposal Team in response to a request from An Garda Síochána after a suspicious device was found protruding from undergrowth by members of the public.
The team arrived on scene at 5 pm and made the shell safe in situ by a controlled explosion. The scene was declared safe at 7 pm.
This type of Artillery Shell is early 20th century in origin and was utilised during the War of Independence and World War 1.
The Defence Forces have advised any members of the public who find such a device to keep a safe distance and inform gardaí.
