Meghalaya governor V Shanmuganathan on Friday said the Northeastern region should find mention in the national anthem. Speaking at the 65th Plenary of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong on Friday, the Meghalaya governor said that the Brahmaputra too should find place in the national anthem.

“The Northeastern region should find mention in the national anthem, only then the people of this region will feel a sense of belongingness,” Governor Shanmuganathan said.

Shanmuganathan, who is also holding charge as governor of Manipur, however did not elaborate on whether he wanted the national anthem to be revised or re-written. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was present at the NEC Plenary, listened with his right palm on his lips as the governor made this plea.

“There are so many things about the Northeastern region that the rest of India should know. Sankaradeva, Lachit Barphukan, numerous freedom fighters, various places of interest should be included in textbooks so that children across the country can know the region better,” Shanmuganathan said.

Festive offer

Assam and Nagaland governor PB Acharya on the other hand said there was a need to bring about emotional integration between the Northeastern region and the rest of India.

“There is a feeling that the tribal people are second-class citizens. This feeling must be removed. Student exchange programme between this region and the of India is one way of removing such feelings,” Acharya, who had pioneered the ABVP’s Students’ Experience in Inter-state Living (SEIL) 50 years ago, said.
