The 25-year-old star appeared as Tamwar Masood in the BBC One soap from 2007 until last month when his character left to travel the world, and the actor is set to star in new six-part comedy Damned.

The show tells the story of two social workers, Rose (Jo) and Al (Alan) and their working lives in a children’s services department dealing with a variety of social issues.

Jo said: “As the daughter of a social worker, who worked for many years in child protection, I grew up seeing social workers go unrecognised for the good things they did and castigated for the bad. It’s like being a traffic warden without the perks.

"Damned is an attempt to portray the tragic-comic lives of social workers, always under pressure, always in possession of a grim sense of humour and always wrong in the eyes of the public.”

The series was created by Jo and Skins actress Morwenna Banks, and is written by the pair and Veep’s Will Smith.

Several other big TV stars are also attached to the project, including Game of Thrones star Kevin Eldon, Waterloo Road’s Georgie Glen and Shameless actress Marjorie Yates.

Himesh has also done a spot of publicity for the upcoming show.

He tweeted a link to an article on the programme and added the caption: “I’m doing a thing.”
