Jose Mourinho confirmed as new ​Manchester United manager

​Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Jose Mourinho as their new manager on a three-year contract with an option for a further year.

Sky Sports News HQ broke the news at 5.20pm on Thursday that Mourinho had signed his contract - and he posted an image of its front page on his new Instagram account at 9.36am on Friday.

That was just minutes after United confirmed the former Porto, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea boss is taking over at Old Trafford from Louis van Gaal.

Mourinho said: "To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game. It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.

"I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans.

"I'm looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years."

In a statement, United said: "Jose, 53, has managed at the top level of European football for over a decade and in that time has won league titles and cups in four countries (Portugal, England, Italy and Spain), as well as winning the UEFA Champions League twice - in 2004 with FC Porto and in 2010 with Inter Milan."

"He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here.

Mourinho will lock horns with several familiar foes next season

United will not be holding a news conference to officially introduce their new manager and Sky Sports News HQ understands Mourinho has no plans to talk to the media until July.

Mourinho is now expected to travel to Portugal where he is due to speak at a university on Monday and Tuesday but United fans will be able to see him at Old Trafford a week on Sunday - the United manager is due to take charge of the England team in the Socceraid charity match.
