LAHORE: At least seven labourers working on the Orange Line train project lost their lives due to the collapse of an under-construction godown on their sleeping tents, near Quaid-e-Azam Interchange, Wara Gujran Ring Road, on Tuesday. Another 15 labourers were also injured in the accident. The deceased were identified as Irfan of Rehim Yar Khan, Maqbool of Ooch Sharief, Usman of Mianawali, Arshad of Jalapur, Nadeem, Zulfiqar and Nadar of Multan. The incident occurred largely due to heavy rains, strong winds and the large piling up of sand alongside the wall of the under-constructed godown. According to the police sources and rescuers, the wall of an under-construction fell down fell on a group of sleeping labourers. Seven labourers died as a result of the wall collapse while another 15 were injured. The victims were all found working on the Orange train project. It was reported that the labourers had been sleeping in a camp near the godown when rain and windstorm caused its wall to collapse. Two workers, trapped under the rubble, died on the spot while five succumbed to their wounds in the hospital. As per rescue officials, 15 workers have additionally been injured in the incident. They were shifted to Mayo hospital for medical treatment, where their condition is said to be stable. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has recorded 25.4 mm rainfall in Lahore while the wind was recorded to blow at a speed of 74 kilometres per hour. Police sources have said that the tents were set up to accommodate the labourers working on the Orange Line train project in an open field at Wara Gujran area Ring Road. Police handed over the dead bodies to their heirs after fulfilling the legal formalities. In a separate episode, an eight-year-old girl died due to electric shock in Manga Mandi police limits. The deceased was identified as Muskaan of Manga Mandi. According to rescue officials, the victim was on her way to her house when she accidentally touched the main electric wire, where a pole had fallen down due to thunder rain last night. The locals reported to have already informed the concerned departments to clear the wires rubble but no significant attention was paid. Police handed over the body to her family after completing the legal procedure.
