Will the Renault Kwid survive the ongoing small-car death trend in India, evident from the fact that the Maruti 800, Alto, Hyundai Eon, even Tata Motors Nano, are not moving off their respective shelves. But in the form of the Kwid, the French carmaker has trotted out a car that looks most likely to counter that trend. In a big relief, bookings have topped 25,000 within a fortnight. (Car Dekho)

Renault India, a fully-owned subsidiary of French car maker Renault SAS, which has seen overwhelming response for its small car Kwid, has geared up to start a third shift from June at its plant in Chennai, to ramp up production.

In just seven months of the Kwid’s launch, Renault has got bookings in excess of 125,000 units, with a waiting period of three months.

“We have already delivered 50,000 cars and as many of our customers are not ready to wait for long, we are ramping up our production to 10,000 per month to meet the demand,” Sumit Sawhney, country CEO and MD, Renault India operations, told FE. He was in Bengaluru on Thursday to announce the company’s foray into the pre-owned car business.

Sawhney said the firm sold 9,500 units of the Kwid in April and is witnessing strong bookings month-on-month since the launch. In order to meet the demand, production will be raised to 10,000 a month. “Currently, the production has been halted due to annual maintenance. We have also added new set of employees at our factory who are being trained to operate in the third shift,” he said.
