Six held for looting jewellery showroom

Surat: Police arrested a gang of six robbers for carrying out an armed robbery of jewellery and cash worth Rs 26.47 lakh in a jewellery showroom on Jhaveri Sadak of Navsari district on Thursday. One of the robbers was caught by people after which police questioned him and nabbed the other robbers. The robbers had fired one round in air while escaping but it hit a member of the gang and left him injured.
Police arrested Suraj Yadav, 23, Avdhesh Jadav, 36, Javed Ali alias Guddu Mohammad Shafiq Ansari, 29, Navinkumar Ravindra Singh, 26, Kameshwar Mahtu, 33, and Samsher Farooq Mohammad, 22.They were currently residing at Jalalpor near Navsari, but had come for employment from Bihar.
The robbers entered Mahakali Jewellers around 2.30 pm and threatened the staff with a pistol and sharp-edged weapons. They asked them to hand over all the valuables and escaped from the showroom. Meanwhile, those in the showroom shouted for help and people were successful in catching Suraj Yadav.
Police arrived at the spot and questioned Yadav about the other robbers. Based on information given by Yadav, police raided the residence of Iqbalbhai in Gauri Shankar Maholla of Jalalpore and nabbed the other five accused. Police recovered a knife, a hammer and a country-made pistol from them.
Police found that the robbers had fired one round in air to scare away locals, but the bullet hit Samsher and left him injured. Kameshwar suffered an injury in hand from a glass on the wall while trying to jump it. Both are admitted in Navsari Civil Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
"We have arrested six robbers and they are being questioned about the robbery. We have recovered the looted material from them," said A P Somaiya, in-charge police inspector, Navsari.
