PU exam results: Switch to English medium did not deter these 2 girls from excelling

Though many students study in the English medium from class 1, they find the language difficult. But Poornima Damodar Marathi and Manitha who are from a rural background. They managed to excel in the 2nd PU exam by studying in the English medium from 1st PU. They had to face a lot of difficulties, including preparing their own food, but successfully cleared the exam with more than 70% marks.

Mysuru: Though many students study in the English medium from class 1, they find the language difficult. But Poornima Damodar Marathi and Manitha who are from a rural background. They managed to excel in the 2nd PU exam by studying in the English medium from 1st PU. They had to face a lot of difficulties, including preparing their own food, but successfully cleared the exam with more than 70% marks.

Both stay at the Vanavasi Kalyana Vidyarthi Nilaya in Kuvempunagar. Poornima, a PCMC student, managed to score 72% with 78 in Kannada, 70 in English, 73 in Physics, 86 in chemistry, 54 in Maths and 76 in computer science. She was provided free education by Vijaya Vittala College.
Poornima said, "During 1st PUC, I had some difficulty but teachers, friends and the college management managed helped me. Whenever I had a problem in any subject, teachers used to help me out and I'm grateful to all of them. If we make a sincere effort, we can achieve anything in life. I want to do engineering but am wondering how to raise money to pay the fees." She is the daughter of DM Damodhar and Savithri and comes from Bangane village, Kumta, Uttara Kannada district. Their parents are daily wage workers at Bangane village. Every day, she had to get around 5am, study for few hours, prepare food and then go to college.
Satya Prasad, principal, Vijaya Vittala College, said, "She is really outstanding. In just two years, she managed to get a good command over English and scored good marks. We'll try do our best to help in her higher education."
Manitha, who stays with Poornima, too studied in the Kannada medium up to class 10 and from 1st PU, she started studying in the English medium. Pursuing commerce at Govt PU College, she scored 491 marks (79%). Though Manitha managed to pass with good marks, sadly she'll have to discontinue her studies due to family problems. Her father passed away recently and she needs to look after her family.
Shivamogga district stands 7th in state

The district has secured seventh place in the II PU results as far as pass percentage is concerned. Of the 18,695 students appeared for the exam, 11,701 have passed. Interestingly, more number of students from science stream are successful this year.
Among the taluks, Hosangar has clocked the highest pass percentage, while Bhadravati stands last. Morarji Government Junior College of Hosur in Shikaripur taluk has scored a centum.
