On the completion of two years of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre today, the Congress termed the tenure as one marred by controversies and unfulfilled promises.

Chief Minister Harish Rawat said the Modi government had cheated every section of society, whether they were Dalits, backwards, minorities or women. The Central Government had been continuously decreasing the Central funds for Uttarakhand, which was a matter of concern, he stated. He was addressing a press conference in Dehradun.

Former Union minister and senior Congress leader Kunwar Bhanwar Jitendra Singh said the two years of the BJP government at the Centre had been full of failures. The Central Government had failed to keep promises made during the Lok Sabha elections.

Jitendra Singh said the only achievement of the Modi government had been the number of foreign tours in which a large sum of public money had been put to use.

The Modi government had completely failed on development agenda. The BJP had promised that its government would facilitate employment for 2 crore persons per year but in its two years in office, the Central Government had provided employment to just about 1.34 lakh persons, he stated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spent Rs 600 crore on his foreign trips so far, which had been a useless waste of money, Jitendra Singh alleged.

Uttarakhand Congress president Kishore Upadhyay was also present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, in two separate media briefings in Haridwar, Congress state media committee in-charge Ambrish Kumar and Mahanagar unit president Anshul Shri Kunj questioned the large-scale celebrations across the country by the party when various parts of the country were reeling under drought, floods, forest fire and violence.

Ambrish Kumar cited policies of Home, Education, Human Resource and Finance Ministries and said it seemed that putting the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh’s (RSS) ideology on the forefront had been the sole mantra of these ministries.

“Finance Minister Arun Jaitley openly warns the judiciary to refrain from active decisions, in context of the Supreme Court rejecting imposition of President’s rule in Uttarakhand. Fundamental rights are being curbed. RSS-ABVP are instilling seeds of fear and division among people of the country. Universities and educational institutions are being targeted to ensure pro-RSS-BJP student outfits and university officials have a major say. Dozens of awards were returned by intellectuals owing to the growing intolerance but PM Modi kept mum over this sensitive issue,” Ambrish, a former legislator, said.

Referring to the pre-election campaign issue of black money, Ambrish said PM Narendra Modi had claimed to bring back black money stacked in foreign bank accounts to India within two months. But now, 24 months had passed and people were still waiting for disclosure of names of black money account holders, he stated.

“NDA’s two-year tenure has failed to provide any hope to the poor, peasant, labourers, youth and middle class. Interests of corporates, rich and those close to the BJP-RSS are being looked after. At grassroots level, people are getting disenchanted with the BJP governance and are slowly realising the benefit of having a Congress Government,” Kumar claimed.

Mahanagar unit president Anshul Shri Kunj also lashed at the BJP for failing to live up to the high expectations the party had created through aggressive media campaign during the 2014 General Elections.

“The BJP surely would be realising that making tall promises is easy than fulfilling them. Two years have passed and not a single Central scheme has been as effective as was MNREGA during the rule of Congress-led UPA regime. Jan Dhan Yojana, Bima Yojana, PM Sadak Yojana and all other major schemes initiated during the BJP rule have failed to provide direct benefit to the targeted segment of the society,” Shri Kunj added.
