Kozhikode: The Kozhikode city corporation plans to provide health insurance to Kudumbashree workers engaged in door-to-door waste collection.
The civic body held discussions with some of the insurance companies and said with the introduction of health and accident insurance coverage, it can curb workers from quitting their jobs citing health issues.

Though the previous corporation council headed by mayor A K Premajam announced the scheme, it couldn't be materialized during his tenure. The civic body will introduce the scheme under annual plan programme for the current fiscal.
The number of Kudumbashree members in 2000 was 750 but now it is 342. Majority left their jobs due to various health ailments as they work in the most unhygienic condition without any protection.
Corporation health standing committee chairman K V Baburaj said, "It will be included as new scheme in the annual plan," he said.
