Religious and political leaders have criticised Nakuru county officials over the arrest and incarceration of a Catholic nun for blocking the just-ended measles vaccination.

Nakuru Arch-diocese Bishop Maurice Muhatia said it was wrong for the officials to humiliate Sister Cecilia Kamau. On Monday, security officers arrested Kamau after she blocked Public Health officers from vaccinating students from a Catholic-run schools in Bahati.

The nun was later locked up at the police station and released on Sh5,000 bond. Nacada chairman John Mututho termed the action as the darkest for the Catholic faithful.

“The nun was acting on orders from the Bishop over the immunisation and it’s sad she had to be humiliated and locked up in a police cell,” he said. Muhatia condemned the arrest and accused the county government of unfairly targeting schools run by the Catholic Church.
