Chennai: The Union government on Wednesday included Narikoravan, Kuruvikkaran and Malayali Gounder in the Scheduled Tribes list. The Centre also identified Irular including Villi and Vettaikaran as Scheduled Tribes and issued a notification.
The Centre also included a few communities from Assam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Tripura. After the Bill becomes an Act, members of the communities included in the list would be able to derive benefits meant for STs.
Some of the major schemes include post matric scholarship, national overseas scholarship, national fellowship, top class education, concessional loans from National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation, hostels for ST boys and girls. Besides, they would also be entitled to benefits of reservation in services and admission to educational institutions. Consequently, the existing entries in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Tripura would be modified.
