A girl student of engineering committed suicide after her parents advised her to concentrate on studies since she had scored low marks in the semester examination.

Police said the 18-year-old girl, a first year engineering student from Valliyoor, scored low marks in the first semester examinations. As her father Muruganandam, a head constable attached to the Moolaikkaraipatti police station, advised her to concentrate on studies, she consumed poison on Tuesday evening, police said.

After being admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, the student breathed her last in the early hours of Wednesday. Valliyoor police have registered a case.
