Inclusion on list could enable a 'life of dignity'

The term Malayali denotes 'people living in the hills'. "Malayalis are settled in different parts of Jawadhu Hills and Pachaimalai as well and agriculture is their prime occupation. Paddy and a variety of raagi are the major crops, besides honey collection. They constitute the largest sect among the tribals," anthropologist S Bhakthavatsalam Bharathi told TOI.on Wednesday.
Traditionally, narikuravas and kuruvikarans are hunters. They lead nomadic lives and rarely put down roots. But many from the community have recently pursued higher education.
"Due to restrictions on use of country-made guns and bird hunting, the community is involved in bead-making and jewellery designing and making," Bharathi said.
