Mumbai: Undertrial in narcotics case throws slipper at judge

According to the police, while Khan was arrested by the Dharavi police in 2014, his trial is yet to begin.

An undertrial in a drugs possession case hurled a slipper at a judge at the City Civil and Sessions Court on Wednesday afternoon, making it the third such incident this year.

The accused, Shahrukh Khan (30), behind bars since 2014 for possessing one gram of the banned narcotic mephedrone, was produced at court 42, a designated court under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at 11 am on Wednesday.

According to the police, while Khan was arrested by the Dharavi police in 2014, his trial is yet to begin. The police said that at noon, Khan, who was seated in the rear of the courtroom with other accused, suddenly stood up and threw a slipper in the direction of Judge Abhinandan Patangankar.

“The slipper slipped from his hand and hit the ceiling. It landed on top of a steel cupboard near the wall of the court room,” said sub-inspector Pravin Chaudhari of the Colaba police station.

Khan was then overpowered by constables who had escorted him from Arthur Road Jail, even as judge Patangankar retreated to his chamber. The police said Khan attempted to assault the judge as his trial was not commencing.

Festive offer

Shahrukh Khan has been booked for committing an act endangering human life and with using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty.

In February this year, murder accused Mubarak Moin Khan had hurled both his shoes at sessions judge D G Murumkkar of court 29. Judge Murumkkar had dodged both shoes one after the other. The police said that Khan had been frustrated after an order into his bail plea was deferred to a later date.

Two weeks before that, Madan Chavan, arrested by RCF police in Chembur for robbery, had thrown one of his shoes at sessions judge Sanjay V Patil of court 25. The shoe had hit the judge’s dais but not judge Patil. The police said that Chavan was enraged that day after the judge adjourned the date for beginning his trial.
