Mumbai University exam racket: Custody of 8 accused extended by 2 days

The police have decided not to arrest the agents who served as alleged middlemen in the scam. They will be chargesheeted later with students who paid them off

The accused arrested in connection with the engineering answer papers being stolen from Mumbai University were produced before a local court and remanded in further two days of police custody.

So far, the police have decided not to arrest the agents who served as alleged middlemen in the scam.

They are likely to be chargesheeted later.

The students who paid off the accused would also be chargesheeted at a later date, the Bhandup police said. The police are also on the lookout for two more persons who have been named as absconding accused in the case.

The Bhandup police busted the scam on Saturday after it came to light that lower-rung officials of the university were allegedly stealing answer sheets of engineering subject papers from the examination centre on the Kalina campus of Mumbai University.

These papers were then handed over to students who would fill in the right answers at the blank spaces left by them following which the papers would be kept in the examination house again.

Festive offer

Each student is suspected to have paid anything between Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000 to get access to one paper.
