Jason Motte will make his Colorado Rockies debut as soon as Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox, but he will not be rushed into a high-leverage situation.
“I’m probably not going to put him in during the eighth inning of a one-run game. … I’ll try to ease him in,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss told Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. “At some point I see him pitching late in games.”
Motte signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Rockies in early December and was competing with Jake McGee for the closer’s role before he went down with a shoulder strain in spring training.
Saunders suggests the 33-year-old Motte could eventually be used in an eighth-inning role. Motte had 42 saves for the Cardinals in 2012, so he does give Weiss another option to close games, particularly because McGee has two blown saves and a 1.42 WHIP.
