GHMC to take measures to protect old tress

GHMC Commissioner Dr. B. Janardhan Reddy on Wednesday held a review meeting with the senior officials of HMDA, Forest, SDR, Horticulture, Biodiversity Wing, Electricity Department and other NGOs to discuss protection of trees during heavy downpours or strong winds / gales.

The GHMC chief has expressed concern over fall of more than 2,000 trees in the recent past due to adverse weather conditions. This is in addition to the trees which were cut as a precautionary measure. He informed that the State government was planning to take up Haritha Haram programme on July 11th wherein 25 lakh saplings would be planted. The government proposes to plant nearly 1 crore saplings as part of Haritha Haram programme. He said that the government wants to plant the saplings of trees which could withstand heavy wind and survive in emergency situations.

Dr. Janardhan Reddy said that the Electricity department was taking all precautionary measures to cut down the trees which are potentially dangerous. As many as 40 emergency teams have been provided and training also is being given to face the emergency situation.

The meeting was attended by senior officials including Additional Commissioner Urban Biodiversity Shiva Kumar Naidu, Urban Bio Diversity Director Damodar among others. (INN)
