A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped and tortured by her neighbour at Niranjanpur village in West Bengal’s Malda on Tuesday. The police said the accused, who is on the run, warned the family of a “repeat performance” if they had approached the police.

The police said on Wednesday that they have formed teams to trace the accused, identified as Pranab Mandal. “The girl knew the accused and he told her that he would treat her to fresh litchis, if she came with him to a nearby grove. The grove was deserted and he threw her into a shallow pit before raping her,” said a senior police officer.

“He attacked her and severely injured her. Her right arm was broken and he told her that he would kill her and her entire family if they complained to the police,” added the officer.
