KOLKATA: On the day of the election, Rezzak Molla had first opened his mouth against Trinamool's strongman from Bhangar, Arabul Islam. Even as Molla won comfortably, Arabul's biggest opponent in his party, Kaizer Ahmed, and his supporters had “questioned“ Arabul's “loyalty" towards Molla. On Tuesday, Arabul received the biggest shock from the party ever since it had revoked the six-year suspension against him some time ago.
His son, Hakibul, was removed from the general secretary post of Bhangar College student union that's controlled by the TMCP. Instead, Kaizer's brother Firoz was appointed the temporary general secretary .
Arabul himself is the chairman of the governing body of this college. His son was the general secretary here for the past six years, though no student union election was held in the college in the last five years.
Molla's supporters see this as a logical conclusion to a poll promise made repeatedly by the newly-elected MLA from Bhangar - he has promised to bring back the “ideal atmosphere" to pursue acade"mic studies here. As a Kaizer supporter quipped: “The tenure of the present governing body will end this June. It's unlikely that Arabul will be brought back." The Arabul camp, though, is confident that Didi will stop such “injustice" against the former MLA from this area. “We turned this CPM fortress to a Trinamool support base. The history should not be forgotten," an Arabul supporter said.
The statistics of the recently concluded election, though, does not support the claims of the Arabul camp. Polerhat II, Beota and Bamanghata are considered Arabul's den. Trinamool candidate Rezzak had trailed from all these three areas by 1277, 241 and 176 votes respectively. Worse, the polling booth where Arabul votes - Tona Uttarpara Primary School - saw CPM garnering 831 votes as compared to the 641 garnered by the Trinamool.
Alook at Kaizer's areas paint an opposite picture. Trinamool led CPM by more than 2300 votes at Jagulgachhi, at Pranganj by close to 4500 votes and at Narayanpur by another 1380 votes. More importantly, Trinamool led the CPM at Kaizer's strongest base, Pranganj, in all the 26 polling stations. Arabul couldn't be contacted.
