Satellite images by Stratfor purport to show Islamic State attack on Russian air base in Syria
The intelligence company Stratfor said new satellite imagery shows extensive damage caused by Islamic State at an air base in central Syria that has been used by Russia forces.
The images purported to show four helicopters and 20 lorries destroyed by fire in mid-May. Stratfor said the images show the aftermath of an attack by Islamic State.
The images have not been independently verified by Reuters.
"In war, even the most advanced aircraft can be shot down, special operations forces can be ambushed, and well-defended airports and army bases can be shelled and weakened from afar by simple, indirect-fire weapons. Such was the case in an attack claimed by the Islamic State on a strategic loyalist air base in central Syria," according to an analysis document provided by Stratfor.
The images were released on Tuesday  by the Texas-based intelligence company in partnership with AllSource Analysis. They were made available on the company's website.
ISIS has not taken credit for the attack, according to reports.
Islamic State released an image on the same day of the attacks showing one of it's rockets firing Grad rockets, according to reports.
Russian officials told the BBC that the base was damaged as a result of fighting between Islamic State and the Syrian army months before any Russia military were deployed at the base.
